Journey of Praying for Hong Kong

2005

February 8 - February 9 "New Year with Joy and Peace" - a Lunar New Year's prayer meeting was held. It encouraged brothers and sisters to remain alert and pray during the Lunar New Year.
February 22 Due to the decrease in birth rate, aging population, and imbalance ratio between male and female, the chief secretary for administration at the time, Mr. Donald Tsang, encouraged every family to give birth to three children. On the following day, the "Every Morning at Eight O'clock, Bless Hong Kong for Five Minutes " prayer ad in the local newspaper used Psalms 67:7 - "God will bless us, and all the ends of the earth will fear him." Later in September, we published "This is a Gift from God" prayer handbook, which specifically prays for the entire stage of pregnancy.
March The government would conduct a survey and launch the legislation procedure regarding the "Sexual Orientation Discrimination Legislation" in April. We earnestly sought the Lord to teach us to pray for our city. On March 12, during prayer we learned about the message in Jonah 4:11 concerning "love those who cannot tell their right hand from their left". It was found that the majority of the youth had little understanding about sexual orientation. We therefore published "Love those Who cannot Tell their Right Hand from their Left" prayer handbook. May the Lord introduce legislation to protect those who cannot discern their sexual orientation. 90% of those in need of protection consisted of youth.
March

Completion of the Fourth Million-Hour Prayer

The 12-month Million-Hour prayer was completed at the end of March.
April

Launch of the Fifth Million-Hour Prayer

"Seek Peace for the World" prayer conference was held at the grand hall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on March 30. We were honored to have Mr. Donald Tsang who was the Acting Chief Executive at the time to be our special guest of honor. We presented a special booklet containing the signatures of over 500 believers to Mr. Tsang, as a gesture to express the blessings and encouragement from Christians in various professions to the HKSAR Government and those in authority.

The General Secretary of Jireh Fund called upon believers to come forward to the stage for those who wanted to take up the commission and go to the nations to spread the gospel, or become an intercessor. In fewer than two minutes the stage was packed with crowds. An invitation also asked those who wanted to become an intercessor in their city to stand up in their seats. Instantly the entire hall was filled with people standing, and praying became a way of life for these intercessors.

The "Seek Peace for the World" prayer handbook was also published to pray for the various mission fields around the world.

May

Launch of Prayer Network - "Extend the Kingdom of God"

During a ladies' camp on May 2, when the General Secretary shared about Hannah's prayer (1 Sa. 1:1), the Holy Spirit moved her to observe how Hannah addressed God as "Lord Almighty" as opposed to God who was gracious and mercy. She learned that praying for marriage and family is a warfare. Not only did this concern the individual, but also whether God's kingdom could be extended. We encouraged brothers and sisters to form praise and prayer groups of two to three individuals and spend around 15 minutes praying for marriage everyday.

After spending much time seeking in prayer, God gave us a name for this prayer movement -"Extend the Kingdom of God". The verse was from Matthew 6:33, "Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Each participant became a "mighty warrior" and began with mighty warrior number one. We encouraged them to build up the Lord's altar and extend the kingdom of God through prayer in their family, office and telephone conference. Jireh Fund provides daily the relevant Scriptural verses and prayers, and these can be received via fax, e-mail or regular mail so that participants can pray with better direction.

June 30 - July 1 "Extend the Kingdom of God" - a 24-hour overnight prayer meeting was held.
November The avian flu was on the verge to strike again. We published "Seek Peace for the World" prayer handbook that specifically prays for the cessation of the avian flu. This was so that brothers and sisters could pray for the world and nations in unity to thwart the avian flu.
December From December 13 to December 18, the Sixth World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference was held in Hong Kong. Many churches prayed for this event. We gathered over 300 believers, 10 churches and para-church organizations to hold a 10-day 24-hour prayer chain event from the 11th to the 20th. At the same time, we published "May Peace be upon the City" prayer handbook that prayed for the WTO conference and the events surrounding the conference. We particularly interceded for the police force and asked the Lord to keep everything and give us peace. We thanked the Lord that our city went through this in peace although there were some intense moments.
December 17 - December 18 At the invitation of the Media Evangelism Limited, a meeting focused on reflection of life was co-organized with the Media Evangelism Limited to pray and thwart the avian flu outbreak.
December 31 - January 1, 2006 "Seek Peace for the World" - a 24-hour overnight prayer meeting was held.
